OUR HISTORY
The seeds were sown for the Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard in the spring of 2010. After visiting The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley and being inspired by a dedicated staff and energetic students, the Grimm Family Education Foundation began cultivating an interest in establishing an Edible Schoolyard in Bakersfield. The Panama-Buena Vista Union School District embraced the concept immediately, and the roots of the program began to grow. A location was identified, a cover crop planted and students were welcomed into the Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard the first week of October 2011. This program is a collaborative effort between the Grimm Family Education Foundation and the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District.
The Grimm Family Education Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Barbara Grimm-Marshall, co-owner of Grimmway Farms. The Foundation’s purpose is to support educational opportunities for students throughout Kern County. Our goal is to provide students the skills necessary for them to meet the high standards required to succeed and thrive in today’s world. The Foundation serves as the fiscal agent of the Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard, as part of its mission to enhance students' education experiences with the long-term result of dramatically raising students' achievement levels and their overall health and well-being.
